Dia de Cesar C Climaco Installation Art

11:15 AM
Dia di Cesar which marks the 31st death anniversary of Mayor Cesar C. Climaco kicked off Friday, Nov. 13 with the Boy and Girl Scouts vigil at the Climaco Freedom Park in Abong-abong Pasonanca at 6:30pm. On Saturday, Nov. 14, the event started with a commemorative mass at the Pasonanca Parish Church to be attended by City Government officials and employees, members of the Climaco family and representatives from the different sectors.

The mass was followed by the wreath-laying and commemorative program at the Climaco Freedom Park in Abong-abong, Pasonanca which will be highlighted by the unveiling of the CCC Installation Art and the Poster-making contest. This year's theme, "Create. Cultivate. Connect." aims to share the legacy of the iconic Mayor to the next generation.

Youth from boy scouts filled the installation with thoughts and drawings guided by the questions that were posted in each panel.

Cesar Climaco, the uncle of incumbent Mayor Beng Climaco, served as the city’s chief executive for 11 years during which he was an outspoken critic against corruption and in particular against the martial law regime of then President Ferdinand Marcos. His assassination on November 14, 1984 in Gov. Alvarez Street remains unsolved up to this time.

"I want to stop illegal logging..", "I want to achieve my goals and aspirations..."

The commemoration of the Dia di Cesar every November 14 is pursuant to an ordinance approved by the City Council with the aim of perpetuating the memory of the legendary mayor.

"Don't leave Zamboanga City."

"I want to be with my parents til the last breath of my life..."

Cesar Cortes Climaco was born on February 28, 1916 to Gregoria Climaco and Isabelita Cortes. He had 2 brothers and 2 sisters- Rafael a lawyer who became a Justice in the Court of Appeals; Jose or Jolly also a lawyer who became vice-mayor of Zamboanga and whose daughter Beng is now the incumbent mayor; Leticia, who married a prominent physician in the city, Dr. Espiridion Alvarez; and Lydia.

"Create better scouts for a better Zambonaga City..."

Cesar’s political career began when he ran for the City Council in 1953, an election which he won overwhelmingly. It was in the same year that he was designated as Mayor of Zamboanga. In 1954, he became the Chief Project Manager and Field Coordinator of Operation Brotherhood in Vietnam, a position which he served until 1955, and which won him international recognition.

He came back to Zamboanga in 1956 and ran in the first election ever held for the position of mayor in the city. Cesar went up against an appointive Mayor, Hector Suarez, and had for his running mate Dr. Tomas Ferrer under the banner of the Liberal Party. Cesar won in that election, giving him the distinction of being the first elected mayor of Zamboanga City.

Cesar Climaco served as mayor from 1953-1954; 1956-1961 and 1980- 1984.

The CCC Installation art is designed and conceptualized by Cedrick S. Zabala and made possible by the General Services Office headed by Arch. Rizamay Basing.

One of the rarest occasions we cover are golden wedding anniversaries. Not many couples are fortunate enough to last 50 years. Some are separated by complication in relationship and some may lose a partner by death. This couple has been tested by time and through the decades, they stand shoulder to shoulder against all odds with their faith, hope and everlasting love with each other. Every kiss is like first time and you can see in eyes how genuinely committed they are to each other. They have been blessed with such beautiful family who truly cares for them. I wish everyone will find their true better half like Iniong and Nene.

Project Red Party: The Invites

1:36 PM
Last month, i had my first opportunity to become an event planner for our thanksgiving party. I'll share little by little every detail of the party and share my thoughts and tips in a series of post called Project Red Party. I posted the moodboard that i created here which involves firetrucks, skylines and things related to music. The party is a double celebration since its my dad's 50th birthday and their 25th (Silver) Wedding Anniversary. They both work at the Fire Department where my dad is the city fire marshal and my mom is a government employee. Thus, the color motif that I chose is red, silver and black.

The first thing we planned out are the essentials of the party: the date, time, venue, and theme. After finalizing them, I started to create the moodboard and eventually the invites. I wanted to create a simple, fun-looking, hip yet elegant looking invitation without much cost. So here's the final look of the invitation. :)

The inspiration for the design is fusion of NYFD (New York Fire Department) and Jazz. We printed it in poster paper and embellished it with crystal stickers to give it a sparkling finish. The envelope is a 6-inch wide special scented envelope with a nice pearly texture. Then to give it a color, i printed a doodle-ish pattern in red paper and covered the inner side of the flap. On the other side of the envelope, we labelled it with the name of the recepient with some musical symbols. And finally, we sealed the invitation with a specially designed emblem of the event which is inspired by the logo of the fire department.

I'm personally satisfied with the design of my first-ever DIY invitation and my parents liked it too. Each invite roughly cost 15 pesos only. With a creative design and resourcefulness, you can really make a cool, cheap but expensive looking invite for your party. Here are some fun behind the scenes photos of us during the process of creating the invites.

Thanks to my brothers, Wella and Lance for helping me out :D More updates soon...

My First Event Coordination

1:05 AM
At last, i have my first ever party to plan. Together with my partner in creative stuff, Wella, my cousin, we will create a themed party for my father's 50th birthday thanksgiving. It is also a double celebration for my parent's Silver (25th) Wedding anniversary. It will be held at Zalo's Restaurant and Bar on November 19, 2011. We already made the initial plans and i will them in this blog in the coming days. For now, here is a mood board that i created for the said party. Some keywords include New York, Music, Jazz, Fire Trucks, Badges, Red, Black, Silver, and Vintage. I'm so excited for this project. Can't wait :D

My First Photo Coverage

2:14 PM
Since our manager (who is also a photographer) is out of town during the event, and the other photographers are either sick or unavailable, I have no choice but to be the photographer for the day. I am anxious to do the job because it's my first time and i don't really know how to use the DSLR camera. Vincent was the primary cam and i was the 2nd unit. He helped me in adjusting the settings since i have no idea on how to combine certain settings on different conditions. When i started to do some test shots i knew that i will really have a hard time. My vision becomes blurry after i peek at the view finder, and it becomes worse after a long period of time even with my glasses on. So what I did is to look at a thing from a distance and allow my eyes to adjust. It was just painful to adjust my vision. So as i expected, my shots are just as blurred as my vision. Fortunately, i had some good shots and enhanced them with the help of some digital tricks.

It was fun to be a photographer for once but the vision is just a problem for me. I guess i need to replace my glasses with contacts but im still not sure if the sudden blurring will happen again. For now, i think i have to stick with point and shoot cameras. I'll just do what i do better for the meantime, making AVP's, editing photos, laying out albums and graphic design. So here are some of my creative shots that came out pretty well. More photos after the jump, enjoy!

ADZU Centennial Logo

7:32 PM
adzu centennial logo by cedrick zabala 100 years seal double Last summer, the director of scholarships, Mr Shing Balatbat, gave me a rare opportunity to design the logo of the upcoming centennial anniversary of Ateneo de Zamboanga. A couple of young artists were also invited to create their own designs. I created three logo proposals and i am very happy that one of my designs was chosen by the committee including Fr. Tony Moreno himself. The logo is basically a vinta, a bangka with colorful sails, which is also found in the ADZU seal as a symbol of the culture of the Western Mindanao. At the center of the logo, two white intersecting stripes form a crucifix, sybolizing Christ and Christianity. At the center of the cross is the seal of the Society of Jesus, the religious order of the Jesuits who built Ateneo. (Download high res here)

The Seal of the Society of Jesus. The "IHS" trigram represents the first three Greek letters of "IHΣOYΣ" (Jesus), later interpreted as "Iesus Hominum Salvator", Jesus, Saviour of Mankind, "Iesum Habemus Socium", We have Jesus as Companion or as "Iesu Humilis Societas", Humble Society of Jesus. (reference: wikipedia)

The vinta also sybolize the journey of the Ateneo. At the bottom of the vinta inscribed "100", typifying the waters, symbolizing the 100 years of Ateneo de Zamboanga. And lastly, located at the below the logo is the theme of the centennial anniversary "Living 100 Years of Excellence, Spirituality and Citizenship."

Aside from the start of centennial celebration of ADZU, the university is also celebrating the 150th anniversary of the return of the Jesuits. Here are some important links that you want to visit to know more about the celebration:

*Reflection mode*
I am very happy for this amazing happening in my life. It makes me realize that designing is not just an art nor a job, it is also my life. Through it, I am able to impart to everybody what God has given me. This is not just a simple job for me, it is a part of history, a legacy that will live forever. I wish the best from the Ateneo community and hoping for more centennial celebrations to come! :D Animo Ateneo!
