My Epic Dream

Here's a post about my dream a while ago. I wanna go straight to the epic part. So i was swimming in a calm lake with few unknown people around me. Out of nowhere there was a weird loud sound of a monster that echoed throughout the lake. From the other side of the lake there were also people swimming and they also heard the sound. Everyone was amazed and we even cheered and clapped.

As i was looking around, a whale breached out of the lake, dived on its back, and plunged back down to the waters. I can clearly remember the figure of the whale. It was dark grey in color, have bumps on the surface and it was not that big. It was a baby humpback whale. I remember that i was in shallow waters as we heard the loud sound, and when the whale jumped, i saw in deep waters and the creature swam underneath me. It kinda freaked me out, who wouldn't? I saw the whale glide underneath me and felt its bumps with my feet for a moment. The feeling was a mixture of calm, amazement, anxiety and fear. Then it went back towards me and eventually engulfed me. I can't remember how it happened but there was a story spreading around the place that day about the boy who was engulfed by the lake whale and survived by ripping through its stomach..haha. epic!

DREAMS - one of the most mysterious gifts that we possess as human beings. No one has fully understood its content and purpose, not even science. They differ from one person to another but every dream gives us the same experience that makes us think they are real at that moment. It taps our senses and digs out sorts of emotion like happiness, sorrow, joy, anxiety, fear, or bliss. They take us to places without the use of our feet. They give us vision without the use of our eyes. 

I have always been fascinated with dreams. Some dreams are simple flashback of memories, while others are extreme, impossible and merely bizarre. Sometimes I write about these dreams and try to seek interpretations, hoping to discover a treasure that is buried in my subconscious. But sometimes words aren’t enough so I try to doodle the remaining images in my memory from the dream.

For artists, dreams have become a source of inspiration. It has influenced the world of literature and art ever since. We can read it in the books of the Bible, in the verses of Homer’s epics, in the novels of Stephen King and even in the songs of Billy Joel and Beatles' Paul McCartney. Dreams also inspired visual artists like Surrealist painter Salvador Dali, and film-makers like Christopher Nolan who directed  “Inception,” a sci-fi fiction action film about manipulating dreams.  With the rise of cutting edge technology, these dreams can now be inspired to create other forms such as computer graphics, digital film and music, and animation (may it be in 2D or 3D form). All of these are not possible without man’s determination to understand, recreate, and share the magical experience of dreams.

Of all the different forms, Animation may be one of the most challenging to create. It uses all the other elements from the other forms: the aesthetics of visual arts, the technicalities of film-making, and the story telling of literature. And to celebrate the wonderful world of Animation, Animahenasyon is here to gather every Filipino animators and talents to showcase their works. For years, the Philippine Animation Festival helped gather, promote, hone, and recognize student and professional animators around the country.
As a budding animator, it is also my dream to be recognized in Animahenasyon. Last 2009, my class project, a stop-motion short film, was fortunate to be one of the finalists. In 2010, a new contest was opened, the poster design contest, and I grabbed the opportunity to participate. With God’s grace, my entry “AnimaDreams” was chosen as the official poster design for this year’s Animahenasyon. It is a Digital Illustration created in Photoshop.

My design is inspired by a dream land where nature, humanity and technology coexist harmoniously. As a Mindanaoan, I incorporated artistic elements that I have been accustomed while growing up in a place known as a melting pot of culture. The background is a pattern inspired by ukkil, the art of carving of the Sulu Archipelago. You can also see the famous vinta of Zamboanga and a woven turung dulang used as the geometric headpiece for the iconic figure. The head, representing the talented and creative Filipino, is in a form of a detailed futuristic luminous tree. It also symbolizes the innovative, forward-thinking, and brilliant mind of Filipinos.

Aside from culture and technology, nature is also a vital source of my inspiration. The creatures are sci-fi glowing versions of bizarre organisms that do exist in reality. They give color to our environment, make it a livelier place.  And together with these creatures are two characters, a boy and a girl, joyously swinging in motion under the giant trees. They are bare foot, one with nature, discovering the fantastic world of dreams.

Like my artwork, Animahenasyon is a festive place where dreams come alive. It’s a place where each and every talent collaborate to create animation, a dynamic form of medium used to express visions and tell stories. Animation is a product of our endless desire to make dreams a reality. Though dreams are mysteries rooted from the deepest, darkest corner of our psyche, it is but a mere extension of a bigger, brighter place that we can easily access anytime, anywhere – our IMAGINATION.

Supernova Dreams

I want to dream big but sometimes i know i just can't coz it seems impossible. i don't have the capacity to be a great person, im not a socially-gifted guy who can befriend anyone who meets on his way and im not that intelligent nor smart enough to decide on my own. im too independently dependent. i cant be on my own. im used to be spoon fed and im too lazy sometimes. i have dreams that i cant imagine. im scared to be very attached with those dreams coz i might fail and disappoint myself or others. im too pessimistic sometimes to dream big maybe because im used to live a simple life. contentment is a word that i don't really understand. can i be rich and successful but at the same time simple? what is a simple life? is it bad not to be simple? I have dreams way bigger than what people think i can be. i want but can i?

Lost

Last night i had this crazy dream. But this one is clear and i can remember some parts of it. Me, my family and friends are having this sort of trip in a town. We'll be staying in this house with an old looking facade with nice rooms. The facade is made of wood that looks like the wild wild west bars. As we approached the house, a man in the front door welcomed us. It was very eerie. He showed me a frame with a newspaper article in it. I saw a picture of the old house with many women wearing an old fashioned dress lying all over the house. Some were lying in the roof, some in the lobby and some inside the house. Accordingly, a mass murder happened years ago in that house and the bodies were left everywhere. The pictures in the frame were so disturbing i can't believe we'll be staying in this house for days.

Then, what i can remember is that we are sleeping in a room. The room has white walls and we were lying comfortably in the floor where the bed. The next day we are out on a trip. There was a pier a few meters away from our home. There were this boats that are made of wood waiting for us. We'll be riding this big boat. The pier has this building and there's a bridge from the second floor to the big boat. We are now in the boat and i was just looking around. Suddenly, i realized that i forgot to bring my bags. I asked them to wait for me. They said that i should hurry up because the boat will be leaving in a while. I rushed to the creepy house and got my packs alone. I ran and the boat was already moving. I jumped to the boat which almost left me behind. Then i looked at the pier and i saw that i there's no 2nd second floor bridge thingy that i should have used. I realized that i'm on the wrong boat! We are leaving fast and i can see the big boat from a distance. I am all alone and i don't know what to do...

There are more of this dream but this is the part that struck me most. I hate this dreams where i am lost. I don't know where the heck i am. The place is so quiet and im just moving forward without any idea what's goin to happen. I woke up and it's already noon time. My right hand hurts and i can feel this pain when i move my thumb. I feel so lost. Now, im in the office to continue my work. I'm doing this shirt designs for my cousin but i can't fully concentrate. I cant produce a good design and its already 2 hours! I'm just surfin the net, checking my facebook account, and i suddenly remembered my dream. I googled "dream interpretation" and looked for the meaning of being lost in a dream. Here is the result:
Lost

To dream that you are lost, suggests that you have lost your direction in life or that you have lost sight of your goals. You may be feeling worried and insecure about the path you are taking in life. Alternatively, you may be trying to adjust and get accustomed to a new situation in which the rules and conditions are ever changing.

I also searched some symbols in my dream like "dead," "house," "boat," "wall," and more. I realized that my dream is so right. I am kinda lost in my direction in life now. Yesterday was just stressful coz i have to face crossroads. I don't know what will be happening in the next few months. Yeah, i'm still in the adjustment period after finishing school. There are things that i want to do and there things that people want me to do. I'm not sure if my decisions are good coz some people might be affected. Anyways, everyday all have to face our challenges in life. I just hope that i will be enlightened so everything will be well...
