Novice "Patók" Digital Issue Cover: LAKBAY

8:32 PM

I can't believe my submission for a national creative magazine would be choosen as a cover art! Novice is "a platform made by young creatives for the passionate, the wanderer, and the free-spirited." I first knew about them during the elections when they released a printed issue of all works inspired by VP Leni Robredo, a presidential candidate who I am also supporting.

In their 4th Printed Issue, I also submitted some of my artworks which were also featured. In their 12th digital issue, they had a theme inspired by a Filipino cultural icon, the Jeepney. I submitted a digital illustration which i titled "LAKBAY," which means journey. I was informed that it was selected to be featured but little did I know that they chose it to be as one of the covers! What an honor!

This digital issue is also very special as it advocates a very important cause which is the #NoToJeepneyPhaseOut. As a cultural symbol of the indomitable Filipino spirit, we should not allow the government to remove the colorful Jeepneys in our streets. Novice features 180 pages of artwork and literature which pay tribute to the jeepney's impact in the lives and psyche of Filipinos.

Patók stands as a testament to the enduring spirit and cultural significance of the Philippine jeepney. It celebrates the unique identity of the Filipino community, paying homage to the extraordinary legacy that this vehicle represents.

Get the chance to purchase the complete digital issue for just Php 250.00. Your contribution will go to funding The Volume Project: Patók Edition, a fundraising initiative aimed at providing grocery packs worth Php1,000.00 to random jeepney drivers in various locations nationwide. The fundraiser will run from June 30 to July 31, 2023.

Visual Identity Project by COM116 Class

9:06 AM
Visual Identity or Branding, are Visible elements of a brand, such as color, form, and shape, which encapsulate and convey the symbolic meanings that cannot be imparted through words alone. In a broader (corporate) sense, it may include elements such as building architecture, color schemes, and dress code (src: BusinessDictionary). For the midterm project of my COM116 (Desktop Publishing) class, I asked them to develop a visual identity for a logo that they designed in their previous exercises. Here are their outputs:

Blue Coffee Cafe + Bar by Mina Alfad

Silver Shoes by Hazel Arias

Sweet Saliva by Marese Malvar

Crimson Babe by Rach Marquez

Red Ninja Agency by Riza Narag

Pink Spoon Ice Cream Parlor by Gab Pareja

Blue Ocean by Mohd Sarajan

Telly Vision by Alvin Serondo

I am really impressed with most of their works. I really noticed how they did their researches and took my recommendations very well. Im happy that their works looks professional and has a high potential for real life work. Which project is your fave? Like and leave your comments below.

Keep an eye on my only hope,
Lest I blink and get swept off the narrow road...

"I like nonsense, it wakes up the brain cells.
Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living,
It's a way of looking at life through the wrong end of a telescope.
Which is what I do, And that enables you to laugh at life's realities."

My Fortress

12:39 AM
Here's my latest digital artwork. Just a simple piece inspired by double exposure photography. Hope you like!

There is a yearning in me, I am woman;
Broken by the tears I've shed, for those
Who have a place inside my heart.
Yearning, yearning greater still with age;
A feeling that I missed something along the way,
Whilst living life and meeting needs,
What seeds did I not sow, that should
Bear fruit now I am older?
All I could do at times,
Was keep my head above the waves
That sought to drown me;
To just keep swimming
All against the tide of life
And hope that love had found me.
When I was young, so easy
To relate and give myself.
But scarred by true reality
And scorn for all my trusting .......
In isolation now I dwell,
Protecting innermost, the child within,
Still crying out "It's me, I'm here"
But not so you can hurt me.
And so along the way, I built
A fortress where no one can be
But me.

Planet Photography Tutorial

10:31 PM
It is another trend in panoramic photography. Planet photography is also known as Polar Panoramic Photography, Mini-Planet and Stereographic Planet. It uses panoramic shots, digital manipulated, to make a photo of planet. I find it very amusing to see what we can do with photos these days. I'm really into it so i tried to make some with the use of panoramic shots i found in the internet. For educational purposes, i grabbed some photos and tried which works best for this technique. Here's one of my favorites and i decided to make a 3-step tutorial out of it.

First, you have to take a nice panoramic shot of your subject. This works best for 360° panoramas like this photo by 360vrs.com. You can see the photo here. Disclaimer! I don't own the photo so don't use it for commercial purposes. :D Download the image and open the image in Adobe Photoshop. Or, you can copy the image below (right click > copy image) make a new document (cltr+n > OK) and paste (ctrl+v).

Next, resize the image so that the width is the same as its height. Go to Image > Image Size or press Ctrl+Alt+I. Uncheck "Constraint Proportions" and change the width and height to your desired size. 600 will do for now. It will look like this.

Rotate the image 180 degrees (Image > Rotate > 180°). By now your image will look like this.

And finally, go to Filter > Distort > Polar Coordinates. Make sure that the "Rectangular to Polar" is selected and click OK. You will have the final output like this.

Awesome, right? You can try doing this to other photos by googling "Panorama" or "Panoramic Photos" or you can be more specific. Not all photos are perfect for planet photography, though. You have to consider some these things. Take the image below as an example.

As you can see in the center, the edges were not seamlessly stitched. So to fix this, you can do some improvisation. Below is the original photo of the panoramic shot above. I copied the image and pasted it in photoshop so it will be a separate layer from the background.

First, i used the rectangular marquee tool (M) and selected a portion of the left edge. You can also do it in the other side.

Then, i cut the selection (ctrl+x) and pasted it above the layer (ctrl+v). It will look like this.

Next, i moved the original image to the left so it will touch the edge. Then, i moved the pasted edge to the other side covering the edge of the other layer like so.

Then i used the eraser tool (soft round 100 pixels) to blend the top layer.

Afterwards, i cropped the white space.

Then, i did the three steps to make the "planet." Here's the output.

However, the shape is irregular and the clouds are not clean. I used the liquify tool to fix it the shape and brushed the clouds. And finally, i added some air balloons and a plane with lens flare for a dramatic effect. :D Here's the final output.

Here are more of my experiments of photos i found in the web.

And here are awesome works i found in the web:
