The most beautiful day of Summer in Zamboanga City has come! Inspired by the Flores de Mayo celebration, the City Government held the annual Festival de las Bellas y Flores, a competition of gowns, arcos and beautiful ladies last May 26, 2018. This year's theme is "Philippine Festivals" where each candidate represents the colorful celebration and spirit of an iconic festival in the country. Thirteen entries vied for the coveted top 3 spots per category. Here are the photos during the competition proper at Centro Latino, Paseo del Mar.

Lamitan was derived from the phrase Lami-Lamihan which means a blend of Merry Making and Conference. The town was named by the first Spaniards from Isabela who explored this area. When the Spaniards arrived the Moros were celebrating the native festival. The municipality of Lamitan was founded in 1886 by the legendary figure Pedro Javier Cuevas popularly known as Datu Kalun. He was born in the town of Bacoor Cavite on June 9, 1846. (read more)

The Pamulinawen Festival is held every first week of the February. The word Laoag means "the place of light or clarity" in Ilokano and now, Laoag City is a 1st class city in the province of Ilocos Norte, Philippines. The festival corresponds with the Feast Day of Saint William the Hermit, which is the city’s Patron Saint.

The T’nalak fabric serves as the festival icon because it symbolizes the blending of culture, strength, and unity of the various ethnic groups living in the province. The T’bolis expressed everything they are in the T’nalak: their dreams, beliefs, myths and even their religion. Making use of the various geometrical patterns and the trademark red, black and white colors, the T’bolis weave the natural and the supernatural in the abaca strands of the T’nalak. (read more)

It comes from the word batbat, a pair of bamboo stick used to separate cotton pods that come from a tall tree called kapas sanglay. The word "kapas" from kapas sanglay means "cotton" in Ilocano (read more).

Summer na Zamboanga 2018 Calendar of Activities

Summer is here! The City of Government of Zamboanga has prepared fun activities for the hottest season of the year. Beat the heat with the lineup of events and competitions that will surely bring out the fun under the sun! Some of the highlights are the Fiesta na Isla de Sta Cruz, Hiphop Dance Competition: The Movie Challenge, Festival de las Bellas y Flores. There are also new competitions in the lineup such as the Comida de Zamboanga Cooking Competition, Mi Ciudad de Zamboanga Digital Art Competition and the Festival Dance Dance Competition. Star Wars fans will gather for the Star Wars Convention and The Force Begins: A Star Wars Fan Film Premiere Night on May 4 at KCC Mall. The colors in motion of Zamboanga Hermosa Festival 2017 were captured through the lenses of the talented Zamboangueño photographers during the #ZamboHermosaFest Photogrpahy competition. Zamboanga Film Festival 2018 Winners

In celebration of the 81st Dia de la Ciudad de Zamboanga, the City Government once again hosted the Zamboanga Film Festival. Now on its third year, #ZFF2018 selected 20 short films produced by Zamboangueño filmmakers and animators. The finalists composed of 10 live action short films and 10 animated shorts (Click here for the list of short film finalists). The films were screened at Centro Latino Theater, Paseo del Mar, from February 19 to 23 which was watched by high schools and colleges in the city. The awards night was held on February 25, 7PM at Centro Latino main hall.

Zamboanga Film Festival 2018 Finalists

In line with the celebration of the 81st Dia de la Ciudad de Zamboanga, the City Government of Zamboanga organized the annual Zamboanga Film Festival to recognize the stories of Zamboanga through the medium of cinematography and animation. The competition has two categories: Live Action and Animation. Ten finalists for each category will be judged by a panel of film experts and the best film will receive P10,000 and a plaque. The films will be screened at Centro Latino Theater Room from February 19 to 23, 2018 on these times: 9AM, 12NN, 3PM and 6PM. Schools were invited to watch the films and right after every screening, the viewers will vote for their favorite films. The films with the highest number of votes will be awarded with the Viewers Choice Award. Special awards will also be given during the Awards Night on February 25 at Centro Latino. The special awards for the Live Action category are: Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Production Design and Most Culturally-sensitive Film. And for the animation category, the special awards are: Best Director, Best Animator, Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects, Best Character Design, and Most Culturally-sensitive film. All winners will receive a plaque and a cash prize of P1,500. Here are the finalists for the Zamboanga Film Festival 2018.
