Support Education in Zamboanga Now!

12:14 PM
Here's an audiovisual presentation which I made for the Education campaign led by the City Councilors and Department of Education of Zamboanga City. Because of the September seige, many schools were destroyed and were used as evacuation centers for displaced families. Classes will be opened on June yet many schools in affected the barangays were not yet rehabilitated. We are still in need of more classrooms, desks, chairs, books and school supplies for the education of our young people.

Because of this rising concern, the council came up with this campaign to help inform people about the situation of the schools and how we greatly need their help. This is aimed to organizations and advocates of education who are willing to extend their support to our community. We hope that someday Zamboanga will find peace and will become a nesting ground for young minds to grow and would someday be the ones who will nurture future generations of youth.

Tangina This: Doomed by a Dam

3:33 PM
Just sharing this story to help the cause of stopping this dreadful news about the indigenous people in Brazil posted a guy named Gonzalo Cesar.

"I have more respect for a Warrior that protects life—for us, for our children and grandchildren and future generations –than for a false civilization and their interests!

While newspapers and television talk about the lives of celebrities, ...the chief of the Kayapo tribe received the worst news of his life: Dilma, 'The new president of Brazil, has given approval to build a huge hydroelectric plant (the third largest in the world).

It is the death sentence for all the people near the river because the dam will flood 400,000 hectares of forest. More than 40,000 Indians will have to find another place to live. The natural habitat destruction, deforestation and the disappearance of many species is a fact. '

What moves me in my very bowels , making me ashamed of being part of Western culture, is the reaction of the chief of the Kayapo community when he learned of the decision—his gesture of dignity and helplessness before the advance of capitalist progress, modern predatory civilization that does not respect the differences ...

But we know that a picture is worth a thousand words, showing the reality of the true price of our bourgeois "quality of life"."

Giant and Rainbow

11:30 PM
It has been months since my last artwork. I have been super busy with work that my creative juices for persnal art has been drained. When I create a digital art, i want it to be personal. There is always an inspiration behind all artworks. It may be a simple idea, another work of art, a stock image that i want to make something out of it, deep-seated emotions, or simply boredom. With these inspiration i fuel my creativity and explore into the world of creation. Sometimes i come up with doodles, sometimes photo-manipulations, and sometimes poetry. For so long i really wanted to come up with something but because of stress, i just can't. I have been searching for photos and looking for inspiration in my favorite sites but my hands froze like something is blocking me to create.

But all of these came to an end when i was convinced to make an artwork for a very talked about issue these days. It is none other than BULLYING. A few months ago news were spreading about people committing suicide because they had enough bullying. In my favorite TV shows they also talked about bullying like Glee and ANTM. I really felt that it's a universal issue and everyone is a victim of this ignorant act. People are bullied about their race, sexuality, height, gender, religion, and more, when something is not "normal." Well, we are all abnormal people. No one is perfect and we all have imperfections. Thus, no one has the right to be a bully.

A while ago i had an idea in mind. I created a portrait of a giant in a fantasy world. A world where he is respected by the normal people. A world where he can fit in despite of his monstrosity. Then there is a rainbow beside him that represents happiness and hope. It may also symbolize the different kinds of people that live in harmony. Here's is my latest artwork titled "Giant and Rainbow".

Typography

5:02 PM
It's in posters, artworks, and fashion. The use of types and fonts has been a classic element in the field of design. Today, there are a lot of different font faces that can be downloaded for free at websites such as 1001freefonts.com and dafont.com. Designers can now use s variety of styles ranging to grungy eroded fonts to fancy retro fontfaces. Some of my few personal favorites are the customized font faces developed and designed by the Last Soundtrack such as the Bleeding Cowboys, the Maple Origins, and Birth of a Hero.

In advertising, font styles are used to attract audiences and may present a certain mood. In publishing and editorial design, fancy fonts are not so practical to use so that the reader's eyes wont be stressed out. Serif fonts (fonts with accents) like Times New Roman and Georgia, are used for lenghty paragraphs because it is more readable than that of Sans serif fonts (fonts without accents). However, Sans serif fonts are used in headlines and posters because it can catch the readers attention.

Today, texts are also used in art. The form of a character can be used to represent an element in an artwork. This is called the art of Typography. Text could be used to convey information both literally and figuratively. Last monday in my photoshop class, we had an activity on typography. Their task is to create a poster that uses typography and vector shapes to promote a certain issue or genre. Here are some of their outputs.

Earth Day 2008

12:49 PM
April 22 marks a special day for the planet. This is a day to appreciate the bounty of nature and to make ourselves awared concerning the issues that affect our environment like global warming. Today, I celebrate Earth day through my craft, which is art. I serve as an instructor during the 1-month arts summer program of the Gallery of the Peninsula and the Archipelago, where I instruct 7 students in developing image acquisition through Adobe Photoshop CS2. One of our activities is to create a poster for earth day which also promote enviromental issues. Here are some of their outputs.

For more of my students creations, visit my multiply account. Anyways, I also made an OBB (opening billboard) inspired by the Earth Day celebration using Adobe AfterEffects for my final project in my Video Production class. Enjoy!

Turn Off the Lights

5:24 PM
Earth Hour on Saturday
29, March 2008,
at 8 o'Clock in the Evening

Support the worldwide campaign against global warming called Earth Hour that calls for everyone to take simple changes that will take simple steps to cut emissions on an ongoing basis. It is about simple changes that will collectively make a difference - from businesses turning off their lights when their offices are empty, to households turning off appliances rather than leaving them on standby.

On Saturday, 29th March 2008, from 8pm to 9pm we ask everyone to join the rest of the world in the observance of the Earth Hour by turning the lights off just for an hour even when you are at home to send a strong message about the need for action on global warming, specifically about the greatest contributor to global warming which is coal-fired electricity.

Let us not forget the two storm surges Zamboanga City experienced last year which resulted to massive devastation along the coastal areas leaving many people homeless. Those experiences were said to be effects of changes in the climate. Continued reliance on electricity sourced from coal-fired power stations causes dramatic increase in droughts and severe storms and massive changes to the environment.

This campaign started in Sydney on March 21, 2007. For one hour, it made a powerful statement about the greatest contributor to global warming - coal-fired electricity - by turning off its lights. Over 2.2 million Sydney residents and over 2, 100 businesses switched off, leading to a 10.2% energy reduction across the city. What began as one city taking a stand against global warming caught the attention of the world.

WE DO THE SAME IN THIS PART OF THE GLOBE, LET US DO OUR SHARE,
SWITCH OFF LIGHTS FOR AN HOUR!
