"Time Out" AdZU Faculty and Staff Art Exhibit

10:14 AM
The Gallery of Peninsula and the Archipelago gathered artists from Ateneo's faculty and staff for an art exhibit. It featured various artwork from different media such as painting, sculpture, photography and arts and craft. The Opening program was held at the Carlos Dominguez Conference Hall, 5:30 on July 17, 2014. Father Willy Samson gave the opening remarks and I gave an inspirational speech about my journey as an artist. The artists were recognized followed by the ribbon cutting at the Gallery by art advocate Councilor Gerky Valesco and Fr. Willy. Here are the photos of the exhibit launch. My ever supportive friends. Thanks for being there for me guys! Love you so much!

Here's my artist statement:

As a young boy I always wanted to be a great artist like Van Gogh and Andy Warhol. But art classes meant watching my mom do cross-stitch all day. I didn't even know how to draw and paint like real artists do. But somehow my eagerness to do beautiful images and my resourcefulness revealed my creative side when I learned how to use Photoshop. I ventured into creating Photo-manipulations and Digital Illustrations by using my doodles as my reference images. I discovered that by creating images I can express myself and show people an art that is developed with technology. There I developed my style of art.

It all starts with doodles, random drawings filled at the last page of my class notebooks. I scan them digitally and transform them using imaging softwares. My favorite subjects are fragments of my being like my experiences, ideas, knowledge, my culture, and my random world of imagination. I always enjoy the process of creation, revision and producing the final form. Most of the time I don't have a concept while doing a work but when every piece has fallen into place a deeper meaning reveals to me which also surprises me. The thrill and excitement of discovery makes me feel like a true artist.

Recently, I had an opportunity to create a set of artworks using traditional medium. My enthusiasm in Painting was reawakened which further pushed me to explore in other medium and forms of art. These are the first set of artworks that are product of my experimentation with wood, nail and strings. Inspired by my mom's cross-stitch works, I attempted to translate my style with the technicality of handicraft. The output is an equitable blend of the rough qualities of carpentry and a delicate nature of embroidery. I am still in constant pursuance of my creative growth and identity and to this day I have renewed hope that someday I will be the artist I always wanted to be.

UPDATE: Just my doodle art blog about the set of artworks which sparked these set of paintings. Check out my Handmade Wooden Signs here.

ADZU Centennial Commemorative Stamps

10:19 PM
So I was googling for "ADZU 100" images and I stumble upon Philpost's website and discovered that they produced Commemorative stamps for Ateneo de Zamboanga's Centennial Celebration. I was so excited to see the official Centennial emblem included in the design. It's my first time to see my work in a stamp and it feel so cool! I hope they still produce this and i will surely buy a lot of this! In years, stamp collectors will go crazy finding these rare stamps. Anyways, it's always great to see your work around. Though I don't get that much credit for doing the logo, I know i'll be forever be part of AdZU's history.

AAO Freshmen Survival Tract

10:22 PM
It's already June which means it's time for school! For the first time i'm not gonna be the eager student who's very excited for the opening classes after a long summer break. Now, i'm a teacher and it's just as exciting! In Ateneo, we always welcome the freshmen so that they will feel at home in the campus. Before the class starts, the freshies will be asked to attend the Orientation Seminar or OrSem.

OrSem is basically a two-day bootcamp that will orient them about the college life, the campus facilities and things they have to know about their college/department, clubs/organizations and academic stuff. To wrap the OrSem, the college student council and all student organizations will have a welcoming party at the night before the first day of class begins. It's a really fun tradition at school that will really make a mark in your college life.

The student council also publishes a booklet on how to survive college life. It is called "Ateneo Freshmen Survival Tract" or AFST which contains messages from heads, information about the campus facilities/buildings, retention policy, and fun trivia about the culture in Ateneo. As a layout artist, I was lucky to produce the AFST during 2008 and 2009. You can see the 2009 AFST here.

Today, other departmental organizations produce their own FST's too like the Accountancy Academic Org. They assigned the Publications committee headed by Jam Quintanes to make their very own AFST which they called AAOFST (I suggested the title, hehe). I was commission to design and layout their 12-page booklet which contains AAO's Calendar of Activities, Retention Policy, Grading System, Photos, and Tips on how to survive Accountancy. Here's the cover design inspired by vintage victorian typography.

The book will be distributed to the AAO freshies this upcoming OrSem on June 7. I'm excited to see the final print and hopefully they will like my designs. Click the image above to see my deviantArt page and hit the fave button if u like :D

ADZU to launch Centennial Coffee Table Book

12:26 AM
Ateneo de Zamboanga Univesity is delighted to announce the publication of a limited-edition coffee table book that tells an extraordinary story of a school’s successes surmounting challenges and uncertainties. Written by Zamboangueño scholars, Pro Deo et Patria: 100 Years of Ateneo de Zamboanga, 1912-2012 traces the history of Ateneo de Zamboanga, from its humble beginnings as a small parochial school in 1912 through its postwar rebuilding and its development into a University.

It is a story of an institution that has been faithful to its mission as a Jesuit and Catholic university in Western Mindanao, intent on transforming lives in a community as fortunes ebb and flow over time. This 200-page coffee table book is a celebration of 100 years of ADZU’s history and tradition of Excellence, Spirituality, and Citizenship with rare photographs of events, places, and people. This beautifully depicted and all-color volume by Ma. Christina A. Cañones, Aireen Barrios Arnuco, PhD, and Monabelle B. Delgado, MA is a valuable reference, a collector’s item, and an ideal gift. Due for release this year, the book is available for early ordering now.

Hardbound books go for Php 2,500.00 each. Orders made before the book launch shall get a special discount of Php 500.00. Take a trip back in time to remember, reflect and revel in some of the milestones and people that have made Ateneo de Zamboanga all that it is today and will be in the future.

Pop Music Cover and DSLR Videography Workshop

2:31 PM
After the very busy December, we're back in class. We started this year with fun activities for our classes before we go to the Midterm week. For my ITCA106 (Sound Supervision) class, I asked them to do a live group cover of a Pop Music of their choice. Nikolai's group got the highest scores with their cover of "Pumped Up Kicks" by Foster the Kids. The Trebor Z crew was there to document this activity.

For my IT405 (Digital Cinematography) class, our boss, Robert Zapata, Jr, gave an extensive talk on DSLR Videography, the equipments we use and some tips on using the DSLR for Video. Before we ended, Darz also gave a magic trick performance. Thanks again to my very participative students and the Trebor Z for sharing their time and knowledge. Check out the video below to see the highlights of our back to back activities.

It's been so long since my last post and now im happy to share the works of my students in my Comm330 (Digital Multimedia) class. Part of multimedia is creating graphics and to test their skill in design and use of Photoshop, i asked them to create a simple promotional poster in line of the celebration of the Centennial Ateneo Fiesta. I also asked them to blog about their poster so click on their posters below to see what they have to say about their own design.

Happy Centennial Ateneo de Zamboanga University!

1:40 AM
Just wanna greet a happy 100 years for my Alma Mater, Ateneo de Zamboanga University. I'm just glad to have my college there where i'm also a scholar priviledge to have a quality education that ADZU has to offer. Thank you so much Ateneo for the opportunity of a lifetime. I will always put into my heart all the lessons i learned in and outside the classroom and cherish all the experiences i had in that campus. I really wish the best for this institution and hope for greater things to come.

I was lucky to have been given the opportunity to design the Centennial logo that will ever be part of ADZU's history. Such a legacy i will always be proud of. And so, here's my commemorative typography art for ADZU@100 :)

Digital Art: Croissance

3:12 AM
At last, my creative juices are flowing and i finally created a personal work. Its been eras since my last digital artwork and i've been busy in editing videos and layouting albums. I was encouraged to do this when i was cleaning my bookshelf. I stumbled upon the literary folios (Marejada) that we published during my college days. As i was flipping the pages, I remembered those years when i was still a student...very idealistic, creative and free. It was nostalgic looking at every artwork and photo which brought memories of the little old room in NCB, working after class to compile the inspiring works of the students of Ateneo.

~Then, I looked at myself now. It seems that i've lost that fire that i used to have during the days. Im in the real world now and it's not about creative freedom and what i want. It's about practicality. It's about satisfying others and getting paid so you don't have to ask money to your parents. You have to learn how to be independent and grow as a person outside the classroom. Most of the knowledge you gained in school won't be that necessary anymore because what matters most is that you get through all the challenges that life throws at you. I've been working for two years already and so far it has been a great ride when it comes to career. But as an artist, i've been digging my own grave and almost drowned out the breath out of my head. I almost forgot how to speak my own mind. But now, i finally find that feeling that i used to have when i made my earlier works. It's like rising from the ashes and coming out of the world that boxed my unique perspective in life. Somehow i feel that little kid inside me has awaken and has been brought back to life.

Croissance by csz97

Well, i know someday, that little kid inside me will become a man. A man with who is not afraid to speak out his mind. A man who is independent and matured enough to balance out the most essential things in life. Someday, i will be someone, but now i have to grow.~

So, as I was flipping the pages of the book, i finally reached the back cover. It was like a journey through memory lane. I remembered graduation and chosing what i will be doing after it's all over. I remember working, and working... and a lot more of working. I snapped out of that fantasy and realized that i was still cleaning my bookshelf. I have more work to be done today and more people to satisfy. But still i am inspired. Inspired to finish my work today and do something different after work. To do what i love most: to express, to be me.

~

AFST 2009

5:57 PM
The Ateneo Freshmen Survival Tract is a project of El Consejo Atenista, the student governing body of Ateneo de Zamboanga University. It is a magazine type manual containing essential information, tips, and guides for incoming freshmen students. The theme for 2009 is El Vida Atenista which means "The Life of an Atenista."

I served as the creative director, illustrator and layout artist of AFST for two years, 2008 to 2009. AFST 2008 looked like a passport and laid out as if you were reading a plane/travel guide. AFST 2009 was inspired by Harry Potter's Hogwarts without the witches and broomsticks. It is also inspired by pop art. It is one of my favorite works which we made only about two weeks including the printing. Here's the document file so you can see it.

Glam & Geek: When Fashionistas and Nerds Unite

1:19 PM
This year, the College of Science and Information Technology of Ateneo de Zamboanga University will be holding their annual acquaintance party at the Grand Astoria Regency on July 25, 2010. The party's theme is all about releasing your inner geek while being fashionable at the same time. Last year the theme was HipRock where two of the most popular cultures collide, the HipHop and Rock cultures. This year, its all about glam and geek, which is a common stereotype of a CSIT student for their excellence in the field of science, mathematics and technology. The party is also a way to recognize the winners of the annual sports festival of the org, the CSITAOlympics. It is a month-long event held at the campus during the saturday afternoons of July where the CSIT students and faculty compete for different sport events. This year's acquaintance party is the third time that the entire college will be celebrating the party as one community. Despite of its diversity, the CSIT aspires to bring out the best of each departments and unite in this event. Here is the official poster of the event.

Animahenasyon is on!

10:47 PM

Natotopak ako kaya gusto kong mag-blog! I just came from the opening program of Animahenasyon at the Gateway, Araneta Center. I met a couple of well-known people in the animation industry during the exclusive event. I met Pocholo the "Voice Master", the voice talent behind so many characters in tv and movies. He even gave us a sample of his voices like the one in the hotdog advertisement. He was the voice behind the puppets and the voice over. I also met the founder of the Animation Council of the Philippines Institute (ACPI), Ms. Grace Dimaranan and the program organizer of Animahenasyon, Michael Ko (see the photo above). I also saw Mr. Edwin of Cutting Edge whom I met when he went to Zamboanga. We had cocktails at the Cinema lobby followed by the Opening films. The first is "Ligtas Likas" a short film about environmental protection. The other is one of the 7 part documentary about Philippine Animation produced by Tuldok Animation and which will be released next year. It was inspiring watching the films and meeting people.

Anyways, aside from the opening program we also went to ADMU and front of PBB house. ^^,
