It's already June which means it's time for school! For the first time i'm not gonna be the eager student who's very excited for the opening classes after a long summer break. Now, i'm a teacher and it's just as exciting! In Ateneo, we always welcome the freshmen so that they will feel at home in the campus. Before the class starts, the freshies will be asked to attend the Orientation Seminar or OrSem.

OrSem is basically a two-day bootcamp that will orient them about the college life, the campus facilities and things they have to know about their college/department, clubs/organizations and academic stuff. To wrap the OrSem, the college student council and all student organizations will have a welcoming party at the night before the first day of class begins. It's a really fun tradition at school that will really make a mark in your college life.

The student council also publishes a booklet on how to survive college life. It is called "Ateneo Freshmen Survival Tract" or AFST which contains messages from heads, information about the campus facilities/buildings, retention policy, and fun trivia about the culture in Ateneo. As a layout artist, I was lucky to produce the AFST during 2008 and 2009. You can see the 2009 AFST here.

Today, other departmental organizations produce their own FST's too like the Accountancy Academic Org. They assigned the Publications committee headed by Jam Quintanes to make their very own AFST which they called AAOFST (I suggested the title, hehe). I was commission to design and layout their 12-page booklet which contains AAO's Calendar of Activities, Retention Policy, Grading System, Photos, and Tips on how to survive Accountancy. Here's the cover design inspired by vintage victorian typography.


The book will be distributed to the AAO freshies this upcoming OrSem on June 7. I'm excited to see the final print and hopefully they will like my designs. Click the image above to see my deviantArt page and hit the fave button if u like :D

Just wanna greet a happy 100 years for my Alma Mater, Ateneo de Zamboanga University. I'm just glad to have my college there where i'm also a scholar priviledge to have a quality education that ADZU has to offer. Thank you so much Ateneo for the opportunity of a lifetime. I will always put into my heart all the lessons i learned in and outside the classroom and cherish all the experiences i had in that campus. I really wish the best for this institution and hope for greater things to come.

I was lucky to have been given the opportunity to design the Centennial logo that will ever be part of ADZU's history. Such a legacy i will always be proud of. And so, here's my commemorative typography art for ADZU@100 :)

Abduzeedo is one of my sources of design inspiration. It's a popular website/blog by Brazilian designer Fabio Sasso and his team. Everyday they gather images around the web and post it in their blog according to a category. They also create and share tutorials for those who want to learn more about graphic design. I have been subscribing the site via email though feedburner.

I always want to be featured so i tried to upload my works in Flickr where they have a group where you can recommend or submit works. Fortunately my typography work "13th Month" was chosen during one of the features called typography mania. You can see it here. Just ctrl+F "csz97". So happy to be featured in their site :D Yey!

My dad asked me to design this print ad inving his fellow Tradeans to join this years Alumni Homecoming. It will be published in local newspaper this week. The design is inspired by vintage posters which uses a variety of fonts and shapes. I used a lovely textured background and four colours associated with their school (well, except for the blue, hehe). I love the combination of the yellow and maroon here. Just want to share my recently finished typography work which i started almost a year ago. I forgot to finish it until i rediscovered it in my folders in my laptop. It's not really a typography work :D i want to make a very graphic line work in illustrator using the "Blend" feature. I miss doing illustrator works. Good thing i have a project this week for my dad that needs some vector work. So here's my recent work, csz97 typography. Click on the image for full view :D

Hey! It's 2011! And i made something for ya! it's a typography with a simple greeting on it! The color is inspired by what they say the color of the year, airy Citrus Yellow. And as you can see in the background there's a cute bunny cause it's the year of the Rabbit! They say that we, born in the year of the horse, won't be very lucky this year. But i hope otherwise :D Good year ahead to everyone!

This is just a short post that i want to share. Last week me and my high school friends decided to make an exclusive FB group for our batch. I made this for our group profile pic. Colors are inspired by glee :D

Statisticians always use the words population, sample, data, average, mean, conclusion, variance and of course, statistics. Meanwhile, culinary artists use french words in their everyday jobs like a la carte, creme, crepe, cuisine, petit (small), blanch (to bleach), sauté (fried over high heat), fondue (melted), purée (crushed), flambée (burned). Every field has its own set jargons that is vital to their careers. Like statisticians and culinary artists, designers (graphic desingers, web developers, couture, interior designers, architects, etc) also has their commonly used vocabularies. Here is a typographic artwork that gives some designer lingos.


I can really relate to this artwork because there is no day that i don't use the word "design." But what struck me most is the last word, "passion." Since the beginning of my journey of being a newbie designer, i always keep this word in my mind and my heart. Everyone should have a passion, a thing that you love to do and will bring you to greater heights. Sometimes we make mistakes (see what i mean?), which will turn us down and sometimes make us want to give up. We should have a backup fuel that will fire our spirits and stand up and pursue what we really want in life, and that is Passion. A statistician may have a margin of error, a culinary artist may not be a cordon bleu (master chef), but what is important is that we should pour all our hearts in what we do and just enjoy life. :)

I can't still move on about this end thing. My last post is basically about my college life. Here i would like to share my latest artwork which i created in commemoration of Earth Day. This is a typographic artwork which i created to remind people of the consequences of our actions today. Because of the things that we do to nature, we are slowly putting it to an end. It is our time to change our deeds and learn how to live green. We can do this by supporting Earth Hour, a worldwide event where people switches their lights off for an hour. It will happen on March 27, 8:30-9:30 PM (here in the Philippines GMT +8:00). Imagine how many kilowatts of energy will be saved if all the lights will switched off in an hour. Going back to my artworks, i created them one in illustrator and photoshop. The typography is a customized font that i made using the brush strokes and later added colors to create a more organic look. I can't make up my mind on what background to use so i created two versions. The first one is more light and dry while the second one is more intense. Click on the images for full view and credits.

It's in posters, artworks, and fashion. The use of types and fonts has been a classic element in the field of design. Today, there are a lot of different font faces that can be downloaded for free at websites such as 1001freefonts.com and dafont.com. Designers can now use s variety of styles ranging to grungy eroded fonts to fancy retro fontfaces. Some of my few personal favorites are the customized font faces developed and designed by the Last Soundtrack such as the Bleeding Cowboys, the Maple Origins, and Birth of a Hero.

In advertising, font styles are used to attract audiences and may present a certain mood. In publishing and editorial design, fancy fonts are not so practical to use so that the reader's eyes wont be stressed out. Serif fonts (fonts with accents) like Times New Roman and Georgia, are used for lenghty paragraphs because it is more readable than that of Sans serif fonts (fonts without accents). However, Sans serif fonts are used in headlines and posters because it can catch the readers attention.

Today, texts are also used in art. The form of a character can be used to represent an element in an artwork. This is called the art of Typography. Text could be used to convey information both literally and figuratively. Last monday in my photoshop class, we had an activity on typography. Their task is to create a poster that uses typography and vector shapes to promote a certain issue or genre. Here are some of their outputs.
