DeviantArt.com has been my source of inspiration and way to share my artworks online. It keeps me updated with the latest styles, designs and works of art of different kinds of artist, from traditional to digital artists. I also get my resources there like brushes, shapes, patterns, textures, and stock images which are free. The only rule is to credit the owner once you will post your work using their resources. I've been a member of the site for five years already and there were just few members back then. I have posted many works and the best thing are the comments of people around the world. Some comments are harshly negative but most are appreciative and constructive.

Now, the site has become a social network where people can be friends and exchange critiques and join activities such as polls, contest and exchanging of llama badges. Awesome, right? Being a member, there are also ranks, from being an ordinary member to a  premium member, to super administrator and gallery moderators. But for most members, the biggest accomplishment is the recognition of your works. The number of faves, pageviews and comments are usually the basis to see the status of your gallery or art work. Everyday, the administrators choose a set of outstanding works and feature it in a special gallery called the "Daily Deviation". If you want to be inspired everyday but you have limited time, this is the place to go.

Recently, i posted my poster design for a contest called Animahenasyon 2013, the Philippine Animation Festival. It's a steampunk-themed poster named "The Engine of Perpetual Motion". My friend, Jude, who also joined the contest, is a very active member of the site and suggested it to be a part of the daily deviation for October 7, 2012. And fortunately, it was accepted! I just had my first daily deviation in 5 years and im really happy to have this recognition. :D We're still waiting for the results of the poster design contest which will be announced on the closing program in this year's festival. I'll be goin there with my fellow Ateneans who are joining the Animation contests.

At last, my creative juices are flowing and i finally created a personal work. Its been eras since my last digital artwork and i've been busy in editing videos and layouting albums. I was encouraged to do this when i was cleaning my bookshelf. I stumbled upon the literary folios (Marejada) that we published during my college days. As i was flipping the pages, I remembered those years when i was still a student...very idealistic, creative and free. It was nostalgic looking at every artwork and photo which brought memories of the little old room in NCB, working after class to compile the inspiring works of the students of Ateneo.

~Then, I looked at myself now. It seems that i've lost that fire that i used to have during the days. Im in the real world now and it's not about creative freedom and what i want. It's about practicality. It's about satisfying others and getting paid so you don't have to ask money to your parents. You have to learn how to be independent and grow as a person outside the classroom. Most of the knowledge you gained in school won't be that necessary anymore because what matters most is that you get through all the challenges that life throws at you. I've been working for two years already and so far it has been a great ride when it comes to career. But as an artist, i've been digging my own grave and almost drowned out the breath out of my head. I almost forgot how to speak my own mind. But now, i finally find that feeling that i used to have when i made my earlier works. It's like rising from the ashes and coming out of the world that boxed my unique perspective in life. Somehow i feel that little kid inside me has awaken and has been brought back to life.


Well, i know someday, that little kid inside me will become a man. A man with who is not afraid to speak out his mind. A man who is independent and matured enough to balance out the most essential things in life. Someday, i will be someone, but now i have to grow.~

So, as I was flipping the pages of the book, i finally reached the back cover. It was like a journey through memory lane. I remembered graduation and chosing what i will be doing after it's all over. I remember working, and working... and a lot more of working. I snapped out of that fantasy and realized that i was still cleaning my bookshelf. I have more work to be done today and more people to satisfy. But still i am inspired. Inspired to finish my work today and do something different after work. To do what i love most: to express, to be me.

Statisticians always use the words population, sample, data, average, mean, conclusion, variance and of course, statistics. Meanwhile, culinary artists use french words in their everyday jobs like a la carte, creme, crepe, cuisine, petit (small), blanch (to bleach), sauté (fried over high heat), fondue (melted), purée (crushed), flambée (burned). Every field has its own set jargons that is vital to their careers. Like statisticians and culinary artists, designers (graphic desingers, web developers, couture, interior designers, architects, etc) also has their commonly used vocabularies. Here is a typographic artwork that gives some designer lingos.


I can really relate to this artwork because there is no day that i don't use the word "design." But what struck me most is the last word, "passion." Since the beginning of my journey of being a newbie designer, i always keep this word in my mind and my heart. Everyone should have a passion, a thing that you love to do and will bring you to greater heights. Sometimes we make mistakes (see what i mean?), which will turn us down and sometimes make us want to give up. We should have a backup fuel that will fire our spirits and stand up and pursue what we really want in life, and that is Passion. A statistician may have a margin of error, a culinary artist may not be a cordon bleu (master chef), but what is important is that we should pour all our hearts in what we do and just enjoy life. :)

I think this the first time that a couple had digital art for their prenup instead of the usual photography. The couple is Edwin and Ann who wanted a concept for their photoshoot about butterflies. So we took the photos in Abong-Abong's Pasonanca river and some shots were taken at our office. I post-processed the photos turning them into fantastic portraits depicting butterflies and their metamorphosis. The story is about finding their way through love, binding and growing together until one day they will mature into beautiful beings, facing the world together. I think this is first prenuptial digital in Zamboanga city since i have not seen anything like this before. I know traditional photographers will not like this but i believe it's the time to accept digital art or "heavily edited/composited photography" as they call it. We have to move on and be different, right? So it's my pleasure to have an opportunity to be the forefront in Prenup Digital Art, i suppose :D. The couple already saw the photos and I'm glad that they liked it. I always liked the 70's. The music, the clothes, the sunflowers, the spirit and colors! It's the hippie era and the people back then were just laid back, cool, and funky! Anyways, today is world environment day so i was inspired to create a digital art. I wanted to incorporate the 70's style so i came up with this. It's all about music and nature. I can't still move on about this end thing. My last post is basically about my college life. Here i would like to share my latest artwork which i created in commemoration of Earth Day. This is a typographic artwork which i created to remind people of the consequences of our actions today. Because of the things that we do to nature, we are slowly putting it to an end. It is our time to change our deeds and learn how to live green. We can do this by supporting Earth Hour, a worldwide event where people switches their lights off for an hour. It will happen on March 27, 8:30-9:30 PM (here in the Philippines GMT +8:00). Imagine how many kilowatts of energy will be saved if all the lights will switched off in an hour. Going back to my artworks, i created them one in illustrator and photoshop. The typography is a customized font that i made using the brush strokes and later added colors to create a more organic look. I can't make up my mind on what background to use so i created two versions. The first one is more light and dry while the second one is more intense. Click on the images for full view and credits.
